GB Athletes from RLSCC

Following on from the success of winning two medals at the World Championships, six of the Great Britain Dragon Boat team who train at Royal Leamington Spa Canoe Club turned up for a photoshoot for the local press.

The team secured a bronze medal in the 200m mixed event (8 women and 12 men), and another bronze medal in the 200m open event (20 men), while also coming very close to getting other medals, including fourth places in the open 500m and mixed 2000m. The World Championships were held in Tampa Bay, Florida between the 3rd and the 6th of August.

Back in their canoes, the team are (from left to right): Abi, Tom (coach), Jan, Tracy, Adam and Ryan.

GB Dragon Boat Team

I’ve just got back from a great day’s photo shoot with the Great Britain Dragon Boat Team. This was on the day they took delivery of their new race kit, making it the perfect opportunity to take photos.

They are currently in the final stages of their preparation for the World Championships next month in Tampa Bay, Florida. The team will be competing in the Premier Open (Mens) and the Mixed categories.

Besides the intermittent rain, the day went really well with the sun shining through the clouds to create some interesting lighting.

Best of luck to the team at the World Championships. The teams website can be found here, and here is the full gallery.

Hoar Frost

Today was one of those days where all the elements came together to turn a merely ordinary setting into an absolutely stunning scene, no matter which way I looked.

Following 3 days of extreme cold temperatures, reaching as low as -19ºC, hoar frost was thickly deposited on almost everything. There is no snow in any of these pictures – just frost. And then finally today at sunset, the dull white sky cleared, leaving a precious few moments of this remarkable scene bathed in beautiful sunset light. A truly breathtaking, if cold experience.

Philippines

While in the Philippines, I spent most of my time living in Manila, which is famed for its spectacular sunsets over Manila Bay. The country is full of very friendly people who always go out of their way to make you feel as at home as is possible.

From the calm and orderly Subic Bay, the pristine white beaches of Boracay to the relentless traffic and urban sprawl of Manila, the country is full of surprises. I am really looking foward to returning to meet up with friends and my wife’s family again.

China and Hong Kong

My visit to China and Hong Kong is the most memorable trip of my life. Just over two weeks of amazing hospitality courtesy of the Chinese, touring around the country to compete in their all expenses paid Dragon Boat Festival. While not competing in the boat, I had the honour of being able to work alongside the acclaimed photographer Ray Little.

Another reason for it being such a memorable trip is this is where I met my wife, as she was there competing for the Philippines.

Japan

While on a visit to Japan I had the opportunity to catch up with friend and renowned wildlife photographer, John Wright. A real eye opener of a trip, from the stunning scenery and volcanoes in Kyūshū where John now lives, the historic shrines and temples of Kyoto, to the modern sprawling mass of Tokyo. Steeped in both tradition and cutting edge technology, the country has left a really big impression on me and I can’t wait to return.

Thailand

A return trip to Thailand gave me just enough time to rush around and take in some of the sights again. An amazing spectacle of Temples, mountains, lakes and beaches offered an overwhelming array of photo opportunities.
